ADA: THE 2010 ADA STANDARDS - SIGNIFICANT CHANGES & COMMON ACCESSIBLE DESIGN MISTAKES (11/4)

  • Friday November 4, 2011 @ AIA|LA
  • 9:30 AM - 3:30 PM (check-in begins at 9 AM)
  • Provides 5.0 HSW/ADA Learning Units + fulfils CA license renewal
  • $125 AIA Members or $185 Non-Members
  • Capacity is limited to 45 registrants
  • Course Description: The initial portion of this seminar will provide a discussion of the significant changes from the 1994 ADAAG to the 2010 ADA Standards, including new scoping provisions & conflicts with the 2010 CBC. The later portion of the seminar will help participants avoid the most common mistakes when designing accessible facilities. Parking, curb ramps, walkways, doors & landings, ramps, stairs, sanitary facilities and signage are often built using standard details from a firm's CAD library. This practice leads to noncompliant features, change orders, angry clients and possibly an ADA lawsuit. Learn how to properly document accessible features to avoid these pitfalls.
  • Instructor: Paul L. Bishop, Architect, CASp - Paul L. Bishop has 38 years of experience in the architectural profession. His practice transcends several areas of specialization, including traditional design services, code consulting and historic preservation. Mr. Bishop has significant experience in the area of accessibility consulting and has provided accessibility consulting services for numerous architects, engineers, developers and contractors on difficult design problems. For 10 years Mr. Bishop provided accessibility document review services for the California Division of the State Architect, Access Compliance Department for K-12, community college and State University system projects and State of California owned and leased buildings. He has provided expert witness services for hundreds of accessibility-related lawsuits, for both plaintiffs and defendants. Mr. Bishop is certified by the Division of the State Architect as a Certified Access Specialist (No. 044) and the International Codes Council (ICC) as an Accessibility / Usability Specialist (#68637). He has also been designated as a Rotational Subject Matter Expert (RSME) by DSA and is contributing to create questions for future CASp examinations. Paul has personally surveyed over 150 million square feet of buildings to determine compliance with the ADA Standards as well as the California Building Code. Mr. Bishop’s teaching experience includes 6 years as an instructor of Building Codes at Design Institute of San Diego.
